Around the world in 50 experiments

It’s time to go to another adventure Around the world in 50 experiments. Today we are going to Israel.

The Dead Sea and the Israeli flag

Israel is a small country in the Middle East on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean. Israel has a population of around 9 million people and shares a border with Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. His capital city is Jerusalem, and money, Shekel.

Israel has a rich and complex history with many important archaeological and religious sites.

Climate

Israel’s climate is diverse, with snow -covered mountains in the north and the warm and dry Negev desert in the south.

Fauna

Israel is home to an enormously diverse range of wildlife, which includes soft turtles, Arab Oryx, polecats marbles, camels, Ibex, Arab red foxes, scorpions, poisonous snakes and many species of birds.

Beach Coral Natural Reserve

Coral Beach in Eilat is a beautiful and popular snorkeling place in the Red Sea. The reef is home to a wide variety of fish and corals. It is the northernmost coral in the world that has formed thanks to a stable and warm climate.

Eilat coral reefs so far have not been affected by coral whitening induced by climate change That has happened in other reefs around the world.

The Dead Sea

The Dead Sea is between Israel and Jordan and is the lowest point on the surface of the earth (400 m under sea level). Warm water is so salty (10 times more salty than sea water) that animals or plants cannot survive (apart from some bacteria). It is actually a lake instead of a sea, surrounded by land. The Jordan River flows to the Dead Sea, but there are no exit streams, so the fresh water of the river soon evaporates in the heat, leaving the salt.

The waters rich in minerals are popular among locals and tourists. The high salinity of the water means that it is dense enough for people to float.

The level of dead sea water has fallen in recent years because the water deviates from the Jordan River, which flows to the Dead Sea, causing concern for its future.

Model the Dead Sea

The Dead Sea is so salty that visitors can almost sit on the surface! We can make a basic model of how salt water affects flotability with water, salt and an egg! Another idea is to make salt crystals to learn about evaporation.

Make a Dead Sea model

You will need

Bowl or glass

Water

Table salt

An egg

Instructions

Fill the bowl or glass around two thirds full of tap water.

Place the egg carefully in the water. It should sink. If the egg floats in tap water, it is probably not a fresh egg, so try a different one. Did you only know fresh eggs.

Remove the egg and add 5 tablespoons of salt to the water. Stir until the salt has dissolved. Try the egg again. If you still sink, add more salt and try again. Keep add salt until the egg floats.

You have made your own Dead Sea model!

Make salt crystals

These Color salt crystals They are very easy to do and look fantastic! They are also a great evaporation demonstration.

Color salt of evaporation investigation

You will need

Bowl or jug

Table salt

200 ml of warm water

Spoon

Leaf

Food coloring

Instructions

Carefully pour water into a jug.

Add two tablespoons of salt and stir until it dissolves.

If you want color salt, add some food coloration to the mixture and stir again.

Pour a small amount of the salted mixture on a flat bowl or plate and leave it somewhere hot. Outside the sun or in a sunny potter is perfect.

After a few days, you will see that salt crystals appear on the plate.

This is what happens when the fresh water of the Jordan River flows to the Dead Sea. It evaporates in the arid climate leaving salt crystals.
