Why ONYX believes that his open source solution will win the business search

Companies have internal data stumps and information that employees need to complete their tasks or answer questions for potential customers. But that does not mean that the right information is easy to find.

Onyx He wants to solve that problem through his internal business search tool. There are other big names in the category, such as Glean, which has raised $ 600 million in risk funds, fighting for market share in the hot category, but Onyx, based in San Francisco, has a differentiator that helps separate it from the pack, he says. It is open source.

Companies can work in approximately 30 minutes, and connects to more than 40 internal data sources, including Salesforce, Github and Google Drive. Business users can pay additional levels of features such as higher login security and an increase in encryption.

Chris Weaver, co-founder and Co-Coo de Onyx, told TechCrunch that he and his co-founder and co-zo Yuhong Sun originally set out to solve a problem that both he and Sun were seeing in their respective engineering roles.

“We knew where things were more or less, but it was still a bit difficult, [and] New people simply couldn’t find anything, ”said Weaver. “It seemed that there had to be a better way to do this.”

Onyx is not Weaver’s first attempt to build a company. His first idea, a live statistics monitoring application for Twitch Streamers, was going well until Twitch killed embedded transmissions and made the product essentially unusable. His second effort, a site to help people compare specialized keyboards, did not work either.

But with the Automatic Learning Background of SUN and the general advances in AI, ONYX technology, originally called Danswer, a portmanteau for a deep response, was different. They launched the original open source project in 2023 and received a strong impulse and comments immediately.

“Ramp was actually one of the first teams that found us,” said Sun. “At that time, we had no way to pay us or anything. We had nothing like support plans or whatever, and there were no paid characteristics. For us, it was like, people really want to pay for our project. I mean, it’s free, but people want to pay for it. So, you know, maybe there is the opportunity to do a business from this. “

Today, the company works with dozens of companies, including Netflix, Ramp and Thales Group. Sun and Weaver largely prove the company’s success to its decision to open the software. It has allowed companies to experience and also avoid a long cycle of business sales.

“The open source is really the only way for this type of solution to climb and get the impulse in each business in the world,” said Weaver.

While trusting that open source is the winning strategy for internal search, the team is entering a competitive field. Beyond the new companies such as Glean, they face the competition of the companies that build their own internal solutions, such as the Fintech Klarna, which has built a Internal search tool and chatbot, kiki.

Onyx is not dissuaded. Starting an internal search tool from scratch is really difficult, said Weaver, and thinks of ONYX as a fundamental tool for companies that wish to build their own internal search products. He said the test is in the numbers.

“We have seen that use grows explosively,” said Sun. “We arrived at a peak of more than 160,000 messages in one week. We really hope to bow in that organic growth and hope that all the teams in the world will use ONYX one day. “

The company also recently attracted a $ 10 million seed round directed by Khosla Ventures and first round capital, with the participation of and Combinator and Angel Investors. Among them are Gokul Rajaram, former member of the Coinbase and Pinterest Board; Aash Ferdowsi, co -founder of Dropbox; and Amit Agarwal, former director of Datedag products.

ONYX plans to use funds to hire staff and develop more premium characteristics.
