Stellar uses a simple file explorer IU through which you can navigate to select files or folders to restore your collection of recoverable elements. It is intuitive and easy to use, and quite fast, considering what it does (it took less than 10 minutes to offer a large list of recoverable files and folders, as shown).

Once the partition or file recovery is carried out, you can address the recovery of freshly restored files and partition folders (if necessary), or from the list of recoverable elements offered by its tool. In cases where reformate or accidental partition errors have been self -inflicted, I have done this to at least two occasions when I went to the wrong unit, successfully restoring the old partition scheme generally brings all old files and folders back.

If file recovery is successful, track a disco health verification

Something I had to cause any problem that would take it along the path of recovery. If you have managed to recover data through ChkdskWindows file recovery or other data recovery tool, it is a good idea to give the problem disk an exhaustive check after it is done.

Hard discs and SSD manufacturers often offer tools such as downloads for units they sell, and there are many free tools and for tasks available for disc health checks. I am partial to the open source Crystaldiskinfo Because it provides a good general description of the intelligent data of an album (self-monitoring, analysis and reports, which includes errors counts that often indicate imminent failures on the disc).

Other tools such as HD Tune Pro ($ 35, occasionally available for free, more free test) and Centinela hard drive (Free available test, $ 20 for the standard version, $ 30 for the PRO version) offer a more detailed disk diagnosis and surface/media scans to provide better information about health and disk condition. The first took 30 minutes to scan to my SN810 3 -year -old SN810 (nominal 2TB; 1.86TB real) before giving 80% a clean health bill despite heavy use, as shown in Figure 5 (the free test does not scan the complete disc as an incentive to buy the professional version).

If a disc shows a questionable health or more than 10% of its sectors are damaged, it is time to replace it. Make a backup while you can request a new device and you can restore the backup when the replacement arrives.

Step 6: Call professionals

If steps 1 to 5 fail, you should seek external help. Here is the aid help list for the help of the The more than 10 main data recovery services For those who must travel on this path.

With luck, you will never need to send a unit to a professional data recovery service. If you do, prepare to pay generously for your work. The charges of $ 300 and more are typical. (The largest units cost more, as expected). And can take weeks or months overcome your service tails.

Some companies will allow you to send them a replacement unit to restore what they find. Others will insist on selling such an impulse, sometimes at prices superior to the market. But sometimes there is no alternative, and you will pay what you should get to obtain precious or irreplaceable files and data.

Be sure to solve most of the cost image as I can before sending a trip to recover. You do not want the bill, however great, is a surprise. In my more than 30 years of work with personal computers, I never had to send a unit for professional recovery. Even so, it is good to know that there are such services if one needs them.

Personally, I learned the value of backups in 1989, when a 300 MB SCSI unit attached to a Macintosh Cratered. I lost a book manuscript as a result. They have never caught me unprotected, you should nor be. Happy computer!
