I could never hack him as a farmer, and the idea of living as a hunter-grocers evokes for me the feeling of being closed from his house. But in the old and abandoned indigenous peoples on the coast of British Columbia, there was a mode of food cultivation that really hits me: the forest garden.
Along with the sites of the archaeological villages that, until 150 years ago, were continually occupied for at least 2,000 years, the Chelsey Geralda Armstrong paleobotan and others have found forest patches where the plants were. Transplanted of distant sites and selectively managed.
The hazelnuts only grow in these sites and would have been brought from afar in the east. The native crab apples would have been brought from the west. The plants were also selected for larger fruits (as demonstrated by the largest seeds), and the ground around the plants was clear, probably by the village children (as the elderly memories suggested). There is a set of approximately a dozen plants that are constantly together and offer a good complement to the diet dominated by the area of the area.
I love the idea of having a secret cleaning in the forest that my people use like a living lin. The density of different plant species is even greater in these patches than in the forest around it, and that reflects the fact that the areas occupied by traditional societies in the Americas constantly show further Biodiversity, in opposition to less over time. Animals also know: hunters talk about Find the best game at the places of the old villages“Drug to the Larder too tempting not to attack.”
Like those cities integrated in the faces of the cliffs, this is a built environment that is combined without problems in the natural and enriches it. We may need to rediscover a model like this if we survive in the long term. And when we do it, together with harmonious cultivation and food, we will rediscover something even more special: a little mottled magic.
