Before the augmented reality was one thing, there was Google Glass: a very publicized experiment that, ultimately, was a failure about problems such as privacy (and only seemed an idiot). In a I/O session Yesterday with the Deepmind CEO, Demis Hassabis, Google Sergey Brin co -founder admitted that he made “mistakes” with Google Glass in several areas.
“I just didn’t know anything about the chain of the electronic consumption supply chain, really, and how difficult it would be to build that and have it at a reasonable price and administer all manufacturing, etc.,” he said during the session.
However, Brin said he still believes in the form factor, adding that the last Xreal device seems “normal glasses” without “that thing in front.” He pointed out that, instead of going alone as before, Google Now has “great partners” in Samsung (the Project Moohan headphones) and Xreal (Project Aura Glasses) as part of the Android XR extended reality program.
There was also a “technological gap” when Google Glass appeared in 2013 that no longer exists, according to Brin. “Now in the world of AI, the things that these glasses can do to help you without constantly distracting you, that capacity is much higher,” he said
Google Glass was not a complete failure. It is easy to forget that the product was solved for many years after its debut, largely as a business device, and only completely suspended in 2023. It also raided a path for future VR and ar wearable devices as Oculus Rift, HTC lives, goal Quest and Apple Vision Pro. However, I do not think about it, none of those projects have fired exactly the world.
