Plex is reversing an unpopular part of its application redesign

Plex says that he is bringing the functionality of music and photos to its main video transmission application. This is an important investment of the multiple applications approach that Plex announced about 10 months ago, although the company indicates that Plexamp and the photos will still be offered as optional independent applications.

The decision to break music and photos outside the Plex Core application took many people by surprise, but it was not necessarily a “bad” idea. As you know, Plex is currently in the last stages of a complete rewriting. Its new application, which is available in some way on televisions and mobile devices, is designed to offer a more focused and modern transmission experience (plus a unified code basis for a faster and faster application development). Then, instead of confusing things with musical photos or integrations, Plex chose when these characteristics sit in a set of independent applications: Plexamp, which has existed for years and photos, a new application.

Many customers saw the merits of an independent photos application. Even so, Plex’s announcement met a sea of complaints. The Core Plex application has always been a center all in one for video, music and photos: people are simply not willing to give up the experience of the super unified application.

The elimination of the functionality of music and photos of the central application also broke many things. Plexamp and the photos are not available on smart televisions, so if you use the Plex Core redesign application on a TV, it is effectively locked in these characteristics. There is also some rarity with musical video libraries (which are forced to Plexamp for some reason), among other problems.

Now, the last review of the Plex application for Roku (V8.4.0) Bring music and photos back to the experience of the Plex Core application. This will be the standard behavior for the Plex -deseƱada application in the future, although it will take all devices for some time, since the new Plex application is currently in an uncomfortable Limbo of Late Development of Early Access.

I must clarify that this change applies both to Plex TV and mobile applications. In addition, Plex will continue to admit the independent Plexamp and Photos applications.

It is good to see a company listening to its customers, although I think this debacle could have been avoided if Plex had adopted a more careful approach with its application review. As you would think that the whole issue of Sonos would be the most important thing, but Plex advanced and made silly mistakes.
