Anthropic Announced today would introduce weekly rate limits for Claude subscribers, claiming that some users have been executing Claude 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with most of the use centered on their Claude code product.

The general weekly limits will begin on August 28 and will be in conjunction with the current 5 -hour limits. Anthrope said that strangulation will only affect 5% of its total users.

It is not surprising that many developers and other users would react negatively to the news, claiming that the movement unfairly punishes more people for the actions of some. The measure also raises the question of how companies that expect to execute more long -term projects could reach their limits of use much faster.

“Claude Code has experienced an unprecedented demand since the launch. We design our plans to provide developers generous access to Claude, and although most users operate within normal patterns, we have also seen policy violations such as sharing accounts and reselling access, which affects performance for all,” Anthrope said in a statement sent to Venturebeat.

He added in an email sent to Claude subscribers who also noticed “advanced use patterns such as executing Claude 24/7 in the background that are affecting the capacity of the system for all.”

Anthrope added that he continues to admit “long -term use cases through other options in the future, but until then, the weekly limits will help us maintain reliable service for all.”

The new rate limits

Anthrope did not specify what are the speed limits, but said that most Claude Max 20x users can expect 240-480 hours of sonnet 4 and 24-40 hours of Opus 4 within their weekly speed limits. ” Heavy users of the OPUS model or those who execute multiple code instances Claude simultaneously can reach these limits before. The company insisted that “most users will not notice any difference, weekly limits are designed to support typical daily use in their projects.”

For users who reach the weekly use limit, they can buy more use “at standard API rates to continue working without interruption.” Many companies may already have an agreement with the anthropic rate limits, but some organizations may be using one of the subscription levels with Claude. This could mean that companies need to buy more access to use some projects.

The additional rate limits occur when users experienced reliability problems with Claude, which Anthrope acknowledged. The company declared that it is working to address the remaining problems in the next few days.

Anthrope has been making waves in the developer community, even helping to boost the ubiquity of AI coding tools. In June, the company transformed Claude AI assistant into a platform without code for all users and launched a specific version of Claude financial services for the business level.

There are rate limits to ensure that models suppliers and chat platforms have bandwidth to respond to user indications. Although some companies, such as Google, have slowly eliminated limits for specific models, others, including Opadai and Anthrope, offer different levels of rate limits to their users. The idea is that electrical users will pay more for the computing energy they need, while users who use these less platforms will not have to do so.

However, rate limits can limit the use cases that people can perform, especially for those who experience with long -term agents or who work on larger coding projects.

Reaction now

Understandably, many users who pay Claude found the decision to accelerate their unpleasant use limits, and denouncing that Anthrope is penalizing users advanced by the actions of a few who are abusing the system.

Although other Claude users gave the anthropics the benefit of the doubt, understanding that there is little that the company can do when people use the models and the Claude platform to their limits.
