How much do viruses change over time?

Abstract

Bacteriophages, or only phages, are small viruses that infect bacteria. Some phages help us killing harmful bacteria and maintain our healthy intestine. Although the phages have existed for millions of years, we do not know much about those of antiquity. To find out, we analyze samples of super old peanking. Using a new technique called of novo Assembly, we rebuild the DNA of the old viruses of these samples.

We discovered almost 300 types of bacteriophages that we had never seen before. But there was also a 1,300 -year -old bassoon that was almost exactly the same as a modern species. This was extremely surprising! Our research provides a useful method to rebuild DNA sequences of old phage and learn more about the history of viruses.
