Amazon is about to travel back in time to the late 1990s and bring back the popular sci-fi franchise. stargate. Martin Gero, who recently created the NBC show blind spot and also worked on all three stargate shows in the early 2000s, he will direct the show and be the showrunner.
“Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a story editor on Stargate: Atlantis. I spent five years on the franchise working on all three series, stargate “He taught me everything about making television; it’s written in my DNA,” Gero said in a statement to Deadline. “I am beyond excited that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with the task of guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase. For those who have kept the door open through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith, this is for you. And for those who are new to our world, I promise you are in for something extraordinary.”
stargateof course, it started out as the 1994 film directed by Roland Emmerich and starring Kurt Russell. From there, it got a television adaptation called Stargate SG-1starring mainly Richard Dean Anderson and which lasted 10 seasons. That program later also became Atlantis Stargatewhich lasted five seasons, and Stargate Universewho ran two.
It’s basically one of those franchises that has stood the test of time, even if it remains a little under the radar. A few years ago, when Amazon acquired MGM, it was among the IPs the company planned to bring back (which also included Tomb Raider, Robocop, Legally Blonde, and more), and now it will.
“stargate is an iconic, enduring franchise that has captivated audiences for decades with its bold exploration of humanity’s place in the cosmos,” Nick Pepper, head of U.S. TV SVOD development at Amazon MGM Studios, said in a statement. “In partnership with our extraordinary creative team of Martin, Tory [Tunnell]and Joby [Harold]”We are honored to open this next door to bring a visionary new chapter of this beloved franchise to our global Prime Video audience, one that pays tribute to the series’ rich legacy while propelling it toward an ambitious and emotionally resonant future.”
There’s no telling how this new show will fit in with all the previous stories, but if anyone knows, it’s Gero, who, again, worked as a writer and producer on all three legacy shows.
