Warning: spoilers for landman Season 2 episode 2 ahead.
As if Tommy’s (Billy Bob Thornton) life couldn’t get any worse. earth man, Season 2 has begun. The Paramount+ show’s season premiere kicked into high gear, with Cami (Demi Moore) officially taking over as owner of M-Tex after the death of her husband Monty (Jon Hamm).
Cooper (Jacob Lofland) has unexpectedly made a lot of money. Having taken out a loan to buy an oil rig, your guessing ability has literally struck slippery gold. All the places he chose to dig have “hit”; In simple terms, that means they are producing an amount of oil that will make you millions.
There are only two problems standing in his way: Cooper unknowingly took out his loan with Tommy’s nemesis Galino (Andy Garcia), and his girlfriend Ariana (Paulina Chavez) broke up with him because of it.
‘I could barely hold back the tears’ when Cooper told Tommy he loved him, says Billy Bob Thornton
On his way to visit his estranged father, TL (Sam Elliot), and the funeral home dealing with his mother’s death, Tommy makes a detour to Cooper after his son asks for help. The two then travel to TL together and have a great heart-to-heart in the truck.
Tommy seeing TL again after so long makes him nervous and he tells Cooper how hard it is to break the cycle of abuse as a father. “The kind of father you have is the son you raise,” Tommy tells Cooper as a warning for helping raise Ariana’s little baby.
In response, Cooper tells his father that he loves him, adding, “You did the best you could and that’s enough for me.” Tommy subtly tries to fight back the tears and it turns out those tears were completely genuine.
“It means a lot in that moment,” Thornton tells me. “Jacob and I don’t really talk about it. Generally, on this set, that’s how things are. We let things happen naturally. In the script, I actually said I try to hold back tears. I say, usually in stage directions, you say, ‘Well, I’m not going to do that.’ Unless I’m sorry, I don’t do it.
“But I barely fought them enough to not turn into a whining idiot, so it was very easy to move on. Jacob grew up an hour and a half from where I grew up in Arkansas, and the boy and I have a lot of similarities in our upbringing. On the show, I really feel like he’s a son to me.”
Watching the scene, it really shows. I got a lump in my throat on the other side of the small screen and I really think it marks a turning point in Cooper and Tommy’s relationship. They’ll have to take on Galino together, but I hope Tommy starts taking Cooper’s intuition, intelligence, and natural aptitude for the job more seriously.
At the very least, I hope they love each other more openly, just like that.
