Plastic pollution is one of the fastest growing environmental threats. Microplastics and nanoplastic are everywhere: in our drinking water, the air we breathe and even ours brains.

Beizhan Yan, an environmental geochemist at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, which is part of the Columbia climate school, has presented new methods to detect and analyze these particles to better understand their impact on human and environmental health. He is also working on ways to eliminate microplastic and nanoplastic waste from laundry wastewater.

“Laundry generates large amounts of microfibers that can end in the ocean and rivers,” says Yan. “We are developing new techniques to filter these particles and eliminate fibers before they enter our wastewater systems.”

Yan is collaborating with several Columbia scientists, including Wei min Of the Department of Chemistry and Collega de Lamont Joaquim goes.
