The landslide / glof of April 28, 2025 in Vallunaraju in Peru

The earth landslides blog It is written by Dave Petley, who is widely recognized as a world leader in the study and management of landslides.

April 28, 2025, A large debris flow toured a channel from an important mountain, Vallunarajuhitting the communities below the slope. At least 100 houses were destroyed and two or three people were killed.

I am not able to definitely say how this event happened. Christian Hugel from the University of Zurich has a LinkedIn post that provides some details. This is part of what you have published:-

“Summarizing certain information about the recent flood of the burst of Lake glaciers (Glof) that occurred in the early hours of April 28, one of the glacier lake The lake with a posterior debris flow that ran down along the Casca River, damaged about 100 houses, destroyed approximately 15 buildings and road infrastructure, and unfortunately also claimed the life of 2-3.

“Some lines of evidence suggest that there were rock fall events before the GLOF of April 28 in this place, including the failures of the slope prior to the event probably the day before the disaster.”

This is a cloudy area, so I can not access satellite images that show the slopes affected by the landslide that began this event. However, Planet Labs He has captured images on April 26, 2025 (before the event) and on April 30, 2025 (after the event) that provides some ideas on the consequences downstream.

Let’s start with the highest main channel in Vallunaraju’s earrings. This Planet Labs The image shows the valley immediately below the pronounced slope from which this event originated. The score is in [-9.44993, -77.45431]:-

This is the same area after landslide / glof:-

And here is a sliding control to compare the two images:-

Clearly, the cloud is an important problem in the image of April 30, 2025, and we cannot see the main part of the slope itself, but at the foot of the steep slope and extensive erosion is evident, and there is a substantial change in the channel below.

This has led to great impacts on the downstream channel. This is part of the image of April 30, 2025, with the channel running approximately from this to west, with wide evidence of the sequelae of the flow of rubble:-

Once again, this event highlights the dangers posed by the events that occur in mountain chains, but then travel to populated areas.
