How to successfully join the points • Derek Cheshire

join the pointsThink about your childhood. Have you ever used those drawing books dot to dot, those with hundreds of numbered black points? Did you get to join the points?

The idea was that you started in number 1 and then you joined in sequence. If I completed the work correctly, I would see a photo of a unicorn, bear or maybe a children’s toy.

Depending on their age, the understanding of the numbers or many other factors, it is possible that it has not united all the points in the correct sequence, and the finished drawing looked a bit unstable. For some, it didn’t matter, but others could have been scolded by their parents for “being wrong.”

Older readers can remember the classic comedy sketch of Morecambe and Wise where Eric Morecambe is playing the piano. He is scolded by the famous director Andre prevent to interpret ‘all the wrong notes’. Eric responds ‘Look Sunshine, I am touching all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order’.

Situations similar to this happen in our business all the time. The points or notes are thrown and we are expected to be reorganized or connected in a particular order. But if this ‘order’ is expected, why bother?

Great discoveries (penicillin) and innovations (publication) arise when there is no preconception about what individual components mean or how/if they must be connected at all.

This sounds a bit like the game and in a way it is. The creation of prototypes simply does not play with another name?

Following the point union metaphor, we must allow employees to play with the points and add the new ones as necessary. The trick is to know how to keep people working with a relevant set of points and have a good dose of chance present to detect those truly ‘aha’ moments and know what action to take.

This sounds like hard work, but it really isn’t. The key is to be a bit organized and realize that innovation is a strategy and, as such, will touch each part of your business. This helps in some way because it means that you do not have to worry about interacting a separate innovation department with your conventional business.
