The dynamics of the coastal ocean regulates the heat budgets and materials of highly productive and economically important regions of the oceans of the world. The deep understanding of coastal processes, for too long, has been hindered by the shortage of high quality observation data, particularly for ocean salinity.
Use of salinity data from the remote detection ocean, Ryan et al. [2024] Provide valuable information about the dynamic processes on the northeastern continental platform of the United States. The analysis reveals a vital interaction between the fresh waters of origin of the river and the salted waters of the Gulf current in seasonal and interannual time scales. The changes in the salinity of the ocean, controlled by the discharge of the river and the swirls, greatly affect the local stratification that varies over time on the continental platform, leaving potential impacts on local biogeochemical cycles and ecosystems. This study points to the vital role of oceanic salinity in changes in property in coastal waters and highlights the complexity of oceanic dynamics on continental shelves.
