The Vouched, The Unaveuched and Digital Phantom: Four Spiders (Araneae) published for, but not happening, Ireland
Abstract
The Gnaphosid Zelotes Subterraneus spider (CL Koch, 1833) is formally eliminated from the Irish list. The names of three species of spiders recently published for Ireland would constitute the first Irish records; However, no coupons were collected. Therefore, it has not been shown that these species are established safely in Ireland and names should not be included in an Irish verification list. One of the species is now mapped for Ireland in several digital data sets of two independent putative observations. The importance of robust filtering criteria to avoid such eventualities is observed.
