YouTube is rolling out a major redesign to its video player on Android and iOS, making big changes to the entire app. The update, which started with version 20.42 as spotted by 9to5Googlewas shown for the first time last week.
The update brings bolder icons, improved player controls, and small changes that make the app feel cleaner. The most notable change is the new icons, which are now larger and rounded. This gives the app a fresher look that matches Google’s current style.
Within the video player, the differences are more noticeable. The landscape mode button is now circled and slightly larger, making it easier to spot. Removed faded background when pausing a video, allowing thumbnails and details to remain visible.
YouTube also adjusted the forward and rewind animations to be less jarring, so jumping forward doesn’t interrupt the flow of what you’re watching.
Landscape mode is finally clean
Landscape mode now looks much cleaner. All the main controls, such as approve, approve, comment, save and share, are grouped in a pill-shaped container in the lower left corner.
One of the most fun additions is the dynamic “like” animation. When you press the approve button, you’ll now see themed animations depending on the type of video, such as floating music notes for songs. It’s a small but clever way to make engagement a little more fun.
YouTube is also fixing a common complaint about the comments section. It now has a proper thread layout, making it much easier to follow conversations and see who is responding to whom. This update helps organize what was once a confusing area.
The launch is already underway globally for Android and iOS, although not everyone will see it right away. If the redesign hasn’t arrived on your device yet, restarting the app could help activate it.
Google describes this as the biggest update to YouTube’s user interface in years. The new player interface is designed to be less intrusive and hide as little video as possible.
