An adventurous and creative academic
Over 48 academic years, Danny authored or co-authored 116 publications: five books, 17 book chapters, and 94 journal articles. He began his career in economics and in the late 1990s devoted himself to international business and strategy, publishing his first historical works in International Business Review, Strategic Management Journaland the Journal of International Business Studies. His research has appeared in 54 journals spanning economics, management, political science, and public policy, including leading management and IB media outlets such as JIBS, JMS, J.W.B., SMJ, AMJand JIBP. His work has been cited more than 15,000 times, particularly on how governance systems, ownership structures and policy frameworks shape FDI and firm performance. Even during his deanship (2008-2014), Danny published 23 articles (more than three per year), demonstrating remarkable productivity and enduring intellectual curiosity.
Danny’s scholarship was developed around three interconnected themes: international business and strategy; corporate governance and ownership; FDI, public policies and development. It examined how global companies operate amid changing political and economic landscapes; how forms of ownership, from the family to the state, shape the behavior of companies; and how national institutions and public policies influence investment, innovation and growth. In his later years, he explored how geopolitical rivalry reshapes both business strategy and public policy, and used the natural resources sector, especially mining, to study how companies interact with local communities, manage environmental obligations, and balance economic and social objectives.
A voracious reader not only of academic research but also of professional media such as Foreign policy, foreign affairs, FDI intelligencehe Financial times, The balloon and the mailand the South China Morning PostDanny constantly made connections between current events and academic research, translating them into practical knowledge. He approached each project with meticulous literary reviews and a genuine joy of discovery, publishing not out of obligation but out of curiosity. As one colleague observed: “He kept doing it long after it was important; he did it because he wanted to.”
