For anyone who monitors global landslides, Ramban’s district in Jammu and Kashmir, India is a family name. Located in a highly tectonically active area of the Himalayas, with a monozonic climate, steep topography and weak geology, earth landslides are a common occurrence in this area. Comparatively high population density means that they often cause economic damage and, unfortunately, loss of lives.
On April 25, 2024, there was a great fault in Colt, near Ramban. This landslide is the object of a new article in the magazine. Earth landslides (Look et al. 2025), which seeks to provide a description of the event and take into account its occurrence. It is a good contribution.
Google Earth’s image below shows the fault site: the location is [33.24247, 75.20793]. The authors correctly identify that this is an old dirt landslides complex that extends a considerable distance by the slope. They show that the landslide showed signs of anguish before April 2024, including the development of tension cracks. Small measures were taken to try to avoid the main failure, which then destroyed the way and damaged 55 houses. Around 200 people had to be relocated at the time of failure, which was triggered by a strong prolonged rain.
The area immediately under the road is obviously unstable in this image, but the old landslide extends much higher than this. This geomorohological environment is common in the area; Many of the slopes are characterized by large and large landslides; In fact, you may see at least two other examples in the image above.

As the image shows above, once such a failure has developed, it becomes very difficult and expensive to manage and mitigate the failure. There is a real risk that earth slide now expands over time, causing much more damage and loss.

(2025) It emphasizes the need to ensure that sites like this are identified as movement begin to develop (or ideally, before), and that measures are taken to try to avoid an important event. Treating with such events after the event is much more difficult.
