The Lumbar Turbometal SSD comes in the classic NVME form factor with a length of about 106 millimeters. The beautifully rounded metal housing has 55 millimeters wide and only 18 millimeters thin. With 150 grams, it is not too heavy despite the metal housing, but it is not light either.
As with many USB4 cabinets, Leartim is also based on cooling with an active fan and cooling slots. The fan is controlled by temperature and starts automatically if the temperature becomes too high.
Lorime Lor specifies a 3600MBPS USB4 data transfer rate for writing and 3700MBPS for reading. However, we could not achieve this in an M3 Macbook Air; In our 4K test with Aja System Test Lite, it was 2664 Mbps to write and 3123mbps to read. Although these are not bad values, the best USB4 units that we have measured so far achieve slightly higher values for writing, but there are no higher values for reading. A check in the M4 Max Mac Studio showed much better values, with 2869mbps for writing and 3499mbps to read.
In a 30 -minute resistance test with the Backmagicdesign disk speed test, the fan began after ten minutes. The turbometal became too warm, it was also noticed after about nine minutes in the data transfer speed, which had fallen significantly to less than 1000mbps. Shortly after starting the fan, the SSD temperature was leveled again, and the data transfer speed increased to its original value. They run only when you have to do it.
During the resistance test, the data transfer speed fell again and again for a short time, only to stabilize immediately. We measure the temperature with bookdx to around 46 degrees Celsius after using the fan. Once the fan has begun, it does not go out.
Portable turbometal SSD is available in 1 TB, 2TB and 4TB capacities. A USB4 cable is included around 20 centimeters long. The unit is formatted as FAT32, so Mac users will want to reformat the unit in APFs. The software supplied is only for Windows.
The turometal SSD is a fairly discreet USB4 unit. Data transfer rates are fine for regular daily use, but if it depends on speed, some SSD work better. Regular falls in data transfer speed are evidence of a thermal protection mechanism, but in practice, it is unlikely that this causes a problem with most applications
