Is there no sense of smell? Try radio waves

In general, we associate smell with bad things, such as body odors or fire or a gas leak, but a sharp sense of smell helps us enjoy food and other pleasures in life.

Many things cause smell loss; Aging is number one, but also brain injuries and smell loss were a common complaint about Covid-19 infections. It is not a potentially deadly condition, so there are very few effective treatments.

Korea researchers have demonstrated A new therapy That may not require chemicals or surgery, only radio waves. They used them to point directly to the part of our brain responsible for the smell. Volunteers with a healthy sense of smell to sit while placing a small radio antenna near his forehead. For five minutes, the antenna sent radio waves that, according to the authors, helped improve the nerves related to the smell in the brain.

(a) Simulated 3D radiation pattern in a 3D head model located between the eyebrows. (b) Sar simulation results at different power levels. (c) Changes in skin temperature over time during RF stimulation. 15 W power was used, with n = 5.

Before and after the short treatment, the authors proved how well the patient could smell very weak smells, such as diluted alcohol or fruit aromas, using smell dispensers in the form of a pen known as sniffin sticks. They also registered patient brain signals to see how assets were their smell of nerves. The team discovered that its method improved the meaning of the smell of the subjects for more than a week after only one treatment.

There are confusion factors. These were people with a normal sense of smell in surveys after five minutes knowing that they were receiving radio wave treatment. The idea that radio waves improved the functioning of the olfactory bulb, without affecting other things, will find skepticism, and brain images are as close to science as music therapy.

What would help is whether people with olfactory dysfunction, such as anosmia (complete loss of smell) or hyposmia (reduced sense of smell) could take the study without knowing why radio signals were sent, or even if they were in a placebo group where waves were not sent.
